Car Sealant Buying Guide

Using car sealant is a great way to keep your car’s paint job looking fresh and new. If you’ve invested time and money in a car with a high quality paint job, you’ll find a car sealant is worthwhile and will keep your car looking fresh out of the shop for years.

Applying sealant just once or twice a year can make a big difference in the way your car looks, and it will ensure that you won’t need to take your car back into the shop for maintenance on the paint job.

However, there are so many types of car sealant on the market that it can be very difficult to choose which one is right for your car. There are several important factors to research before buying a sealant for your car. Here’s what you need to consider.

Type of Car Sealant

There are a few different types of car sealant available, and there are pros and cons to each type. When purchasing your car sealant, it’s important to look at the material the sealant is made from. There are many different types of materials that are designed to protect your car’s paint job, but depending on the type of paint and color you have, you may want a specific option.

It may be helpful to talk to the professionals who painted your car to find out what sealant they would recommend. You may even be able to test out different sealants with them to determine which one would be the best fit for your needs.

Most car sealants are made with polymer technology. These polymers are extremely strong and essentially repel dirt and debris to protect the paint job. Before purchasing a sealant, you’ll want to do some research on the specific type of polymer they use and how strong it is.

Some polymers have added features for extra protection. For example, some polymers have UV protection to block out sun damage, and others have waxes and/or silicone’s blended into the formula for a wet look.

Additionally, there are a few sealants that aren’t made with polymers at all, but are instead made with an acrylic glaze. This provides a similar protective layer, but these sealants are often quite thick and difficult to apply.

Sealant Finish

Regardless of what type of sealant you purchase, different sealants are designed to have different finishes. Some are designed to provide a very wet, glossy look, while others aim for a bright, vivid shine. The look you want is based entirely on personal preference.

Certain car colors look best with a specific finish, while others just need that extra level of sealant for protection. When shopping for a sealant, it’s always helpful to test it out at the store if you can. If you don’t have that option, try searching online for before and after pictures of the sealant in use to get an idea of what it will look like on your car. This will allow you to really compare the differences between finishes and determine what type you want.

Protection Levels

Different sealants protect your car from various aspects of the elements. The level of protection you need will likely depend on factors like where you live, how much you like to drive your car, and what other chemicals or treatments you put on it.

Some sealants repel dust, debris, and dirt from the road and the weather, but that’s it. Others can protect against more heavy-duty threats like acid rain and sun damage. Others can actually even eliminate scratches and swirls on your paint job when applied correctly.

You’ll also want to consider how long the sealants last – will you have to reapply every month or every six months? Again, you may want to test out the sealant or look for photos and videos online to get an idea of how it will work before making a purchase.

Ease of Use

The ideal car sealant should go on smoothly and easily, with minimal effort. It should spread over the car with gentle swipes and leave an even coat at the end. There are a few different methods for applying car sealant, and you should ask your car mechanic or another professional which would work best for your car.

You can find instructions on how to apply your sealant on the back of the bottle, and you can find video tutorials online if it’s your first time applying sealant to your car. Ideally, the sealant should require minimal buffing once it’s initially applied. You also shouldn’t have to put too much muscle in to spread the product either – it should go on without too much extra effort.

Bottle Size and Volume

When purchasing a car sealant, it’s important to make sure you get good value for money. You should always consider the volume of the bottle before making a purchase. If a sealant comes in a very small bottle, you may need to purchase multiples just to treat your entire car.

While it’s important to invest in a high quality sealant, you should make sure you’re getting enough volume to make the purchase worth it. You can usually find the volume listed on the back of the bottle with other product specs.

If you want to maintain your car’s paint job, it’s important to apply sealant at least a few times a year to keep it looking clean and shiny. It’s always fun to drive a car that looks shiny and clean, and a good sealant will ensure that you don’t have to worry about the effects of nature as you’re going about your day.

There are so many sealants on the market to choose from, so no matter what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find an option that fits your needs. If you’re really struggling to find the perfect sealant, try consulting with your local car dealer or mechanic. They can likely recommend you something that’s a good fit for your specific brand, make, and paint job.

Conclusion

Car sealants have seen a big rise in popularity over the last few years and is more commonly used on new cars to protect the factory finish. They offer so many benefits and as polymer technology has improved, so have the paint sealants.

All of our recommendations within this article are designed to last from 3 to 12 months and will improve the appearance and protection of your paintwork. If you are planning on applying car sealant to an older vehicle, we highly recommend that you use a clay bar firstly and then use a strong car polish to remove any defects in the vehicle. Once this preparation is out of the way, apply the sealant of your choice.

For further protection, you can then apply wax to the paintwork but there really isn’t any need to continually apply paint sealant to the paintwork until the life span has been reached.

What Are Your Thoughts?

  1. Hi Dan,
Newbie here. I have never used Wax, polish or paint sealant in the past. I have some questions and was hoping to pick your brains as I am buying a new dark grey colour Kia Sportage. The dealer wants £290+vat to include paint protection. Does the dealer offers something different from what you recommending? or is it just a rip off? I am thinking may be this is something I can do myself and just buy one of your recommendations and do it myself. I want it to repel dirt, grim and also avoid chip on the bodywork, while driving in motorway. What do you suggest I should use. Any advice is most welcome. Thanks Martina

  2. Hey Martina – The dealership will always charge an inflated price (as you would expect) but most will provide a guarantee of some sort. I believe Kia provide 5 years? Depending upon whether you have the time and are willing to put in the work, you will certainly save a fair amount of money!
