If you are looking for the best car lift for your home garage, ensure that your garage or professional garage has adequate space. You will need exact measurement of the floor space (length and width) and of course the height.

The height will more than likely be the most important measurement. Many people forget that the car will be on top of the lift and will therefore be taller than the lift itself. If you include the length of the bonnet as well, the additional height is quite tall.

Two post car lifts are the most popular lift in the home garage environment. However four post lifts are still very popular and are usually used by professional mechanics.

There are various other car lifts such as drive on parallelograms, scissor, in ground and low/mid rise frame engaging lifts. Portability of a car lift is a big consideration for those that will not have the space in their garage for both a lift and a car.

An alternative to the 2 post and 4 post car lifts is the scissor lift. The BendPak MD-6XP Scissor car lift provides an impressive lift of 6000 pounds.

The scissor lift benefits from being able to fit within narrower garage bays, which wont take up as much floor space. Scissor lifts are usually much cheaper and has less components that could potentially go wrong.

2 Post Lift v 4 Post Car Lift?

A two post lift is the cheaper alternative to a four post lift and are great for vehicle repairs and short term storage. A four post lift is usually a drive on car lift, which is less time consuming and is great for long term storage.

The length of time you wish to store your car on a lift should depend on what car lift you own. All four wheels of a car would be supported by a four post lift, hence why it is more suited for long term storage.

If you work on cars quite often, you will want what is best for you. Working underneath a car is made a lot easier by having a lift, but even easier with a two post lift.

This is because a four post lift can get in the way and make it awkward using tools underneath the car. However, the sturdy drive on ramp make it much easier to set the car up and position on the lift.

best car garage lift two post four post

One issue that was rather irritating with my last two post garage lift was the height of the posts. Many of my cars are lowered and the posts couldn’t get under the car.

A four post car lift has a very low ground clearance, which makes loading low cars easier. However, with my newer two post car lift, you are able to lower the post jacking points up and down.

Many people are put off from a four post lift due to the additional size it takes up compared with the two post lift. However, its important to note that a four post lift can be portable due to a caster kit that many come with. Unlike a two post lift has to be bolted to the floor to ensure stability.

Personally, I much prefer a high quality two post lift than a four post lift. With regards to the storage of a car, I have stored cars for months on end underneath a car on top of a lift.

What is the Best Garage Car Lift?

For the majority of garages, the two post car lifts work perfectly. As shown in the first picture in this article, I have a red two post that is a red version of the Triumph NT-9 and I cannot fault it.

My previous garage car lift was over 10 years old and had started to leak hydraulic oil rather badly. This was very unsafe and forced me into looking for an upgrade.

All my old classic Mercedes Benz’s are over the two tonne mark but this car lift is able to handle this with ease. With a 9000 lbs weight limit, the car lift can handle most vehicles on the road.
